Different Version Models

Modern smart glasses, most notably the Meta Ray-Bans, are designed to avoid looking like bulky tech gadgets. Because they are integrated into existing, recognizable eyewear lines, they come in over 150 different combinations.

  • Iconic Frame Styles: They are available in classic shapes like the Wayfarer (rectangular), the Headliner (rounded), and the Skyler (retro cat-eye).
  • Deceptive Lens Types: Do not assume they are only sunglasses. Models frequently feature transition lenses or entirely clear prescription eyeglasses designed for indoor, everyday use.

What to Look For (Identification)

Because frame shapes and lens colors vary wildly, the most reliable identification method is the Golden Rule: Look for the two circles.

The Golden Rule

Check the upper outer corners of the front frames (near where the hinges connect to the arms). On standard glasses, this area is flat or has a metal decorative rivet. On smart glasses, you will see two distinct, black circular cutouts embedded directly into the plastic:

  • Left Corner: Houses the ultra-wide camera lens.
  • Right Corner: Houses the LED recording indicator.

How to Tell When They Are Recording

Manufacturers are required to implement privacy warning systems to alert bystanders when the device is actively capturing media. Here is how to tell if a recording is in progress:

The LED Light

The right circular cutout contains a bright white LED. It flashes once to signify a photo being taken, and stays solidly illuminated or heavily pulses while recording continuous video.

Tamper-Proofing

You cannot simply put tape or a sticker over the recording light. The glasses contain proximity sensors; if the light is obscured, the camera automatically disables itself entirely.

Physical Gestures

Watch the wearer's hands. To trigger a recording without using an audible voice command, they usually must physically tap or slide their finger along the side of the right temple arm.

Privacy Laws Summary (US & UK)

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

United States

  • Public Spaces (First Amendment) Filming in public spaces where there is no "reasonable expectation of privacy" (e.g., parks, public streets) is broadly protected under the First Amendment.
  • Audio & Wiretapping Because these glasses record audio, wiretapping laws apply. In "two-party" or "all-party consent" states (like California, Florida, Washington, and others), all parties must consent to an audio recording if there is an expectation of privacy. Secretly recording private conversations in these states is illegal.
πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§

United Kingdom

  • Personal Use Exemption Filming in public for strictly personal or domestic use is generally permitted under UK law.
  • GDPR & Data Protection Act 2018 The legal landscape changes if footage is shared online, monetized, or used to identify individuals. The wearer may then become a "Data Controller," subjecting them to strict data protection laws and individuals' right to privacy.
  • Harassment & Anti-Social Behavior If an individual is targeted, persistently recorded without consent, or filmed in a manner causing distress, the wearer can be prosecuted under harassment or anti-social behavior legislation.
